77. HUGO (Victor). Œuvres complètes. Paris, Furne, 1840-1846 - Lot 77
77. HUGO (Victor). Œuvres complètes. Paris, Furne, 1840-1846. 16 volumes in-8, illustrated with 34 plates, in romantic period binding in purplish morocco half-basin, spine decorated with gilded motifs, straight and curved fillets, vegetal volutes, fleurons with a bird spreading its wings, etc. Beautiful copy in period binding.
A fine copy in contemporary binding. Second collective edition of Victor Hugo's works published by Furne from 1840 to 1846, after the Renduel edition which ran from 1832 to 1842; the Furne edition was originally published in installments and originally comprised 12 volumes. A volume 9 bis was added later, followed by the 3 volumes of the Rhin, which formed volumes 14 to 16. Volume 13 never appeared. It was customary for volumes to be numbered consecutively, on the spine, from 1 to 16, although the title pages retain a different numbering. Our copy is therefore rigorously complete with text and illustrations, portrait-frontispiece and 33 plates, as precisely described by Talvart and Place. Attractive period binding. Minor foxing, a little heavier on volume 6, one page torn in volume 16 (page 131), but present. Spines slightly sunned (Talvart & Place, IX, p. 60-61).
Also included:
- BRILLAT-SAVARIN (J. A.). Physiologie du goût. Paris, Just Tessier, 1834. 2 vol. in-8 in period romantic binding. Some brown spots.
- FENELON. Les aventures de Télémaque. Paris, Lebigre, 1830. 2 vol. in-8, illustrated with numerous plates, in period romantic binding. - BOURASSE (J.-J.). The most beautiful churches in the world. Tours, Mame, 1857. Romantic boards, ill.
- CHASSANG (A.) Histoire du roman. Paris, Didier, 1862. In-8, bound in half brown chagrin, titled spine. Letter from the author to Abbé Migne, on the title page. Abbé Migne was an important publisher of French-language religious works, heading a workshop of 300 people.
- RENAN (E.). Vie de Jésus. Paris, M. Lévy, 1863. In-8, brown half-maroquin, spine ribbed, decorated and titled, combed edges.
