85. LAPLACE (Pierre-Simon de). Exposition du système du mond - Lot 85
85. LAPLACE (Pierre-Simon de). Exposition du système du monde. Paris, Bachelier, 1835. In-4, xiv, 474 p., [1] f. (errata), long-grained violet morocco, richly decorated ribbed spine, gilt fillet frame on covers, fillet on edges, interior gilt roulette (Bauzonnet). Sixth edition, illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the author, in which chapters 12, 17 and 18, which had been omitted from the fifth edition, have been reinstated. Copy in a remarkable binding signed by Antoine Bauzonnet. This work by Pierre-Simon de Laplace (1749-1827) presents a complete vision of the solar system without resorting to mathematical formalism. It synthesizes the advances of 18th-century astronomy and mechanics, including his own contributions to the study of universal gravitation. In particular, he presents his famous Nebula Hypothesis, proposing that the solar system arose from the contraction and cooling of a cloud of incandescent gas. Slight alterations to the binding's tint, slight impact to the last plate, not serious, numerous brown spots, other defects are minor. (Brunet, III, 834).
