126. OVIDE. Oeuvres complettes d'Ovide. Paris, Debarle, An V - Lot 126
126. OVIDE. Oeuvres complettes d'Ovide. Paris, Debarle, An VII (1799). 7 vols. in-4, ii, cxxv, 290 p. ; 436 p. ; 392 p. ; vii, 504 p. ; 495 p., [1] p. (table) ; xx, 496 p. ; 447 p., half tan basane with smooth spine decorated with lyre and eskhárion irons (period binding).
Uncommon copy reprinted in quarto format on laid paper of the edition of Ovid given by Jean-Charles Poncelin de La Roche-Tilhac (1746-1828). Ovide's French translation is illustrated with charming frontispieces engraved by Franc¸ois Marie Isidore Queverdo (748-1797), the last three of which, composed of medallions, are ravishing, Cohen tells us. Several texts complement Ovid, including hymns by Callimachus, a Greek poet from Alexandria.
Provenance: from the library of Jean Debry (1760-1834), attested by his bookplate engraved with the imperial eagle on the back cover. Jean Debry was a deputy at the Convention, where he voted for the death of Louis XVI, and a member of the Comité de salut public (Public Safety Committee), before coming into contact with Bonaparte and being re-elected to the Cinq-Cents. He cooperated in the Floréal coup d'état and was appointed Prefect of Doubs. During the Hundred Days, he accepted the prefecture of Bas-Rhin from the Emperor, but was dismissed during the Second Restoration and exiled to Mons, where he lived out his remaining years.
Some rubbing to binding, foxing and other minor defects (tear in margin of one leaf, small impact on two cuts, etc.). (Cohen, 776).
