138. [Binding] CICERON. CICERO (Marcus Tullius). M. Tvllii C - Lot 138
138. [Binding] CICERON. CICERO (Marcus Tullius). M. Tvllii Ciceronis Opera omnia. Genève, E. Vignon, 1617. Gd in-8, [4] f., 436 col. 1 bl. f. ; 958 col. 1 bl. f. ; 635 col. 1 bl. f. ; 714 col. 1 bl. f.; Index of 39 leaves, 1 bl. f.. Remarkable contemporary binding, in russet calf with center and corner decor in multiple framing, double gilt fillets, fleur-de-lys, repetitions of small irons forming garlands. The central diamond-shaped motif and the four corners are composed of fine foliage motifs in small iron, all surrounding unidentified ecclesiastical arms. The spine features a remarkable longitudinal decoration: a vertical frieze of foliage is surrounded by successive framings of double gilded fillets and petit-iron garlands, echoing the motifs on the boards, and completed by four cross-hatched lozenges. All edges gilt. The binding is contemporary with the book, and perhaps even slightly earlier, in the case of a slipcase, which seems likely. Although observation of other copies shows that the paper and printing are of poor quality, and the title page often shows signs of wear on all copies, this one is particularly worn. The body of the book is warped when you try to open it fully. It has to be said that, if there has been any rebacking, it has been very well done, and on a book of identical dimensions to the original. Be that as it may, the interest of this copy lies less in the book itself than in its binding and remarkable gilding. Angular tear not missing on 10 leaves. Binding worn and rubbed, one corner dulled, one corner damaged with cardboard missing, edges dulled, small loss on upper headpiece. Laces broken, only the ends remain.
