176 MOLLIEN (Gaspard Théodore). Voyage dans la république de Colombia, en 1823. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1824. 2 vols. in-8, iv, 307 p., [1] f. (errata) ; 316 p., [1] f., fawn half-basin with wavy smooth spine (period binding).
First edition illustrated with 8 mezzotint plates by P. Legrand, mostly based on drawings of local types by François Désiré Roulin (1796 -1874), and a large folded in-fine map. Gaspard Théodore Mollien (1796-1872) visited Colombia, which was undergoing a political transformation following the wars of independence against Spain. He describes the social, political and geographical conditions of Colombia at the time, as well as the landscapes, indigenous cultures and challenges of exploration. Joints cracked, freckles quite present and sometimes strong, small traces of ink on one plate, other defects are minor. (Chadenat, 3821).
