295. [Sciences]. Set of LAS from eighteenth- and nineteenth- - Lot 295
295. [Sciences]. Set of LAS from eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scientific personalities: - 1 LAS of the zoologist and politician Bernard-Germain de Lacépède (1756-1825), dated Paris March 7, 1812. - 1 LAS from mathematician and politician Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), dated 10 Ventôse an X on Senate letterhead and recommending Jean-Siméon Champy, the son of chemist Jacques Champy, in consideration of the latter's services in Egypt. An engraved portrait is attached. - 1 LAS from chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul (1786-1889), dated Paris July 27, 1882, accompanied by the menu for the banquet given by his son in honor of his centenary in 1886 and containing an albumen print of the chemist's portrait. Includes a LAS from his son. - 3 letters from the chemist Jean-Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832) dated 29 Thermidor an XII, LAS traveled with special stamp from the Ministry of the Interior; a LAS dated 17 Thermidor an IX traveled with special state franking mark, and a LS dated 25 Germinal an IX. These letters are of a political nature. - 3 LAS from physician-philosopher Pierre Jean Georges Cabanis (1757-1808) dated 14 Thermidor an III, 10 August 1807, the last undated. The longest of the letters (3 pages) speaks for itself: The royalists have little to fear, at least here: they are murdering, it's true, in a few departments; but it's the republicans they're after, rather than the furious red bonnets. The royalists would only have real success by making the latter their vanguard, but this treachery has been unmasked, and if we are determined to shed every last drop of our blood rather than allow the royal party to gain a foothold, we are no less determined to perish at the stake rather than give ground to madmen whose short reign has done more harm to the freedom of mankind than that of the three most abhorred tyrants. - 1 LAS from the military physician and epidemiologist Jean-François-Xavier Pugnet (1765-1846), dated April 22, 1846, traveled. - 1 LAS from zoologist Isidore Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1805-1861), dated June 6, 1885. - 1 MAS from botanist Jacques Etienne Gay (1786-1864), dated September 6, 1845 and shipped from Switzerland.
