SMALL IMPERIAL JIAQING JADE SEAL   With... - Lot 232 - Baratoux-Dubourg Enchères
SMALL IMPERIAL JIAQING JADE SEAL   With a grey and white rectangular base, the top a dragon carved out of a white vein, the base with the three characters FEI TI TING “Fei Ti pavilion”. China, Jiaqing period (1796-1821)   Total height : 4,7 cm – Size of base : 2,9 x 1,5 cm   This seal’s imprint corresponds exactly to the one illustrated in the Qing dai di hou xi yin pu, vol. 9, 2nd book, concerning the Jiaqing emperor seals. It is to be noted that the imprint of our seal bears exactly the same tiny gap in the edge line we can see on the imperial seal’s imprint in the book. Our seal has another small gap along the rim, made after it’s impression in the imperial collection. The FEI TI pavilion is a pavilion in the Anlan gardens, made at emperor Qianlong’s request, an imitation of Yuyuan garden at Haining, which the emperor visited when travelling south. This pavilion was very much appreciated by the Qing emperors. Qianlong himself celebrated it in several poems. Condition : Two tiny chips on the base rim, one the lower part of left side (right on the imprint), already visible in the imperial seals book, and one on the top line. The jade skin on one side of the base shows some wear the size of a square tag. It is possible that a tag with some corrosive glue was left on the seal for a long time and has attacked it’s surface.   Provenance : collection of a scholar from Bordeaux, France, who teached at the Bordeaux university, and who collected from the early 1950’s to the early 1990’s. Most of the auction comes from his quite eclectic collection comprising Asian art but also books and maps from all over the world, parts of which were already sold in two previous auctions.   A 20 000 € deposit is requested to bid on the seal.   The seal can be seen at the experts office in Paris until Monday, June 6 th. Upon appointment with Anne Papillon d’Alton at +33 6 87 15 73 13
