This famous collection by Jean Malaurie, published by Editions Plon, is dedicated to real-life literature and anthropology, and sheds a touching and erudite light on the complexity of the world's civilizations. It began in 1955 with Les derniers rois de Thulé, devoted to the Inuit. This was followed by Lévi-Strauss's Tristes Tropiques, the collection's second best-selling title, which is not included in this set.
