256. BARRAS (Paul). 2 LS on Executive Directory letterhead dated Paris 17 and 22 Floréal AN VII, countersigned by Joseph-Jean Lagarde. These two letters follow the Rastatt attack, from which Jean Debry narrowly escaped. In one, the president of the Directoire expresses his astonishment at this act of ferocity, which cannot go unavenged (the back of the letter bears the handwritten words Rastadt, plein-pouvoir, passeport, &c &c ), while in the other he announces the release of 10,000 francs for the immediate needs of Jean Debry and citizen Roberjot (the widow of Claude Roberjot, who lost his life in the ambush). One is from a secretary, the other may be autographed; both are signed by Paul Barras (1755-1829) and Joseph-Jean Lagarde (1755-1839). Letters a little creased.
